Preventing West Nile Virus: What You Can Do

This time of the year, mosquitoes are a very real threat. Not only are they an annoyance, but they may possibly carry  the West Nile Virus. 4 Connecticut towns have recently tested positive for WNV carrying mosquitoes.

If you are spending time outdoors between dusk and dawn, there is a large chance you are being bit by mosquitoes.  West Nile is a  serious condition that is passed through mosquitoes. It can lead to infection and inflammation of the brain.

The best way to try and prevent WNS is to prevent being bit by mosquitoes.

To Avoid Mosquito Bites:

  • When possible, wear long sleeves, pants and socks.
  • Use insect repellant carrying DEET to provide lasting protection.
  • Avoid going out in peak mosquito hours (dusk to dawn)
  • Change your clothes & shower often to rid yourself of sweat. Mosquitoes are attracted to bacteria in sweat.
  • Change pet’s water
  • Change water in bird baths, plants and any area where water may become unpleasant
  • Keep grass well kept to reduce hiding spots for mosquitoes.

There are currently no known treatments or cures for  West Nile Virus, so  it’s important to follow these steps to try and stay West Nile Virus- free.
